Ok…I’ve quit counting the days because the reality is that I over the last week I’ve gone out for a couple of hours a day to do the same thing, and they hardly deserve their own days. So we will try it this way and see.
Soooo……Today I dropped the top of the Phone Box off to George, my fiberglass guy. The next step is for them to coat it with fiberglass resin, cover it in a mat that I forget what it’s called, and then they will cover that in a gel coat. Once that is done I will go back through the top and fine tune everything.
I’ve learned a tremendous amount about using this foam. One of the reasons I was so anxious to get this off to the fiberglass shop as quickly as possible is that I have a small 20×20 workshop, and and a 3×3 roof takes up a lot of space…which means it’s in the way and I don’t want it to get dinged more than it has been. The second…and most important reason is that I keep working on it chasing the imperfections.
When I was in high school I remember shaving once and I couldn’t get my sideburns even. I kept trying and trying until ultimately I shaved an entire inch of hair off around my ears. Working with the foam can be the same way. So I’ve learned through this process the goal is to get the foam as close as possible and do the fine tuning stuff once the fiberglass in on. The fiberglass won’t sand away as easily and I can build on it with less trouble.
I’m being told that the roof should be done late this week or early next week. So my next goal is to clean up the shop from the explosion of foam, winterize the shop a bit, and begin work on the base.
